IELTS Speaking Part 1

Sport: IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions and answers

Questions the examiner may ask about sport, each with a natural band 8–9 sample answer. Read them aloud, then try your own.

Do you play any sports?

Badminton, though only really in winter. Someone in our building puts up a net on the rooftop, and a group of us play under a couple of bright bulbs until about ten. In the hotter months I don't do much apart from the occasional game of cricket with friends.

Did you do much sport at school?

Not as much as I'd have liked. Our school had a tiny playground, so proper sport was limited to the annual sports day, where I once came second in the sack race. Most of our exercise came from playing cricket in the corridor during break time, which the teachers hated.

What sports are popular in your country?

Cricket is by far the biggest. When the national team plays, the whole country practically stops, and people gather around TVs in tea stalls to watch. Football is also hugely popular, especially during the World Cup, when you see Brazil and Argentina flags hanging from rooftops everywhere. Badminton is a winter favourite too.

Do you prefer watching sport or playing it?

Playing it, I think, although I probably spend more time watching. When I'm actually on court, I forget about everything else for an hour, which is something watching can't give me. Watching cricket can also be quite stressful, because our team has a habit of making every match far closer than it needs to be.

Is there a sport you would like to try in the future?

I'd love to try kayaking. I saw some videos of people paddling through the wetlands up in Sylhet, and it looked both peaceful and exciting. It's not something you can easily do in Dhaka, but I'm hoping to join a guided trip with friends after graduation, provided someone teaches me properly first.
