Overall, both registered and active accounts grew dramatically over the twelve-year period, and the proportion of accounts in active use rose. Sending money to family members was by far the most important use of the service.
In 2012, there were just 3 million registered accounts, of which only one million were active. Both figures increased sharply in every subsequent period, with registered accounts reaching 135 million in 2024, a 45-fold rise. Active accounts grew even faster, to 71 million, meaning that just over half of all accounts were in regular use by the end of the period, compared with a third at the start.
Turning to the pie chart, transfers to family accounted for 38% of the total value of transactions in 2024, more than double any other category. Bill payments made up 17%, followed closely by shopping and merchant payments (15%) and salary and wage payments (14%). Mobile phone top-ups represented only 6%, and other uses the remaining 10%.
