Professional sport has never been more popular, yet in many countries the number of young people who play it is falling. Instead, they follow matches, highlights and gaming versions of sport on their phones and computers. There are several reasons for this, but well-designed policies could reverse the trend.
One reason is that watching sport has become easier and more attractive than ever. Streaming services and social media offer endless highlights and commentary, while football video games let young people feel involved without leaving their room. Another reason is a lack of opportunity. In crowded cities like Dhaka, many playgrounds and open spaces have disappeared under new buildings, so children have few safe places to play. Finally, academic pressure means that many teenagers spend their free time at private tutoring rather than sports clubs, and some parents see sport as a distraction.
Several steps could encourage greater participation. First, city authorities should protect and create public facilities such as parks, football pitches and indoor courts, and keep them free or cheap to use. Second, schools should give sport the same status as academic subjects, with regular lessons and competitions that involve everyone, not only the most talented. Making activities inclusive is important, because many young people, especially girls, give up sport when they feel they are not good enough.
In addition, the popularity of professional sport can be used positively. Clubs and famous athletes can act as role models by running coaching sessions in local communities, turning spectators into players. Technology itself can help too, as fitness apps and online challenges can motivate teenagers to be active.
In conclusion, young people are watching rather than playing sport mainly because of the appeal of screens, a shortage of spaces and pressure to study. I believe that better facilities, a stronger place for sport in schools and the involvement of professional clubs could help many more young people take part.
