IELTS Speaking Part 1

Work: IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions and answers

Questions the examiner may ask about work, each with a natural band 8–9 sample answer. Read them aloud, then try your own.

What job do you do?

I work as a junior data analyst for a mobile banking company in Dhaka. I joined about eight months ago, straight after graduating, so I'm still fairly new. Most of my day goes into cleaning up transaction data and turning it into reports that the marketing team can actually use.

Why did you choose that kind of work?

Mainly because I've always enjoyed spotting patterns in numbers. During my final year I did a small project on how people in villages use mobile money, and I got completely absorbed in it. On a practical level, analytics jobs are in demand here at the moment, which made the decision a bit easier.

What do you like most about your job?

I'd say it's the moment when a messy spreadsheet finally makes sense. Last month, for instance, I noticed that a lot of customers were dropping out halfway through signing up, and my manager used that finding in a meeting with senior management. Knowing my work feeds into real decisions is genuinely satisfying.

Is there anything about your work you would like to change?

The commute, definitely. The job itself is fine, but getting from Mirpur to Gulshan can take well over an hour in Dhaka traffic, so I'm often drained before I've even switched on my laptop. If the company allowed a couple of work-from-home days a week, I think I'd be far more productive.

Do you think you will do the same job in five years' time?

Probably not exactly the same one, no. I'm hoping to do a master's in data science, possibly abroad, and then move into a more senior role where I'm designing the analysis rather than just running it. That said, I'm fairly sure I'll still be working with data in some form.
